Barack Obama

will be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States based on today’s superdelegate endorsements and the results of South Dakota and Montana’s primaries. This concludes DoubleSpeak’s coverage of the 2008 primary. Bring on the general.

Out Of Breath…

Day 36
2:18 PM MT.

Being on the road (and eating 640 calorie muffins) doesn’t exactly “promote” physical fitness and it can be tough for a person to stay in shape. Yet, just this morning Peter turned to me and alleged, “I feel like I could go out and run a mile!”

Well, we just pulled off on a scenic lookout heading west on I-90 and our collective out-of-shapeness is now confirmed. We dug out the old pigskin from the back of the minivan for a quick toss and things got interesting when we all tried to run for more than 40 seconds. Let’s put it this way: I am winded and just want to nap.

We are on an absolutely gorgeous drive from Sioux City, IA to Montana. Currently making good time (surprisingly little traffic, ha) and now headed to the Badlands National Park to see some sights.

This has been my favorite drive so far and we are taking some time to actually stop and “smell the roses” (thanks D.B.S.).

Scenic View

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions for places and things to do whilst on this drive and keep reading! We are going to produce an episode of DoubleSpeak this evening and we’ll have it up for you in the next day.

Long Drive, Little Internet

Day 36
12:22 PM CT.

The Three, well Four, Amigos

I can’t even imagine what this type of tour will be like a few years down the line with ever more portable audio equipment, faster computers, smaller cameras, and some type of true broadband connection. We could do amazing real time reporting and communication. Of course we’re somewhat limited by our dial-up speed connection.

It is an amazing day. Warm without a cloud and the sky. Watch DoubleSpeak Go!

Cruise With Me

Day 35
7:01 PM CT.

The first of many sunsets that we’ll experience from the car over the next few days.

Sunset

Tomorrow we’re leaving Sioux City, IA to drive across South Dakota, through Wyoming, and on to Montana. As much as this trip is about working, it’d be a crime to do this trip and not stop at the world famous locations we’ll be passing in the next few days. We’re definitely going to the Badlands and Mt. Rushmore as well as the Crazy Horse Memorial. Anyone have any other recommendations? I’m about to spend some time looking through Let’s Go Roadtripping USA for ideas. This is the part of the trip I’ve always anticipated the most.

Sadly we’re expecting to struggle with the Internet connection for the next week at least as it’s only going to get worse. We’ll still be blogging but it remains to be seen how we’ll do with photos and episodes.

South Dakotans Oppose Abortion Ban

is the conclusion of a new poll from the Argus Leader. “47 percent of voters polled would vote to reject the ban, compared with 39 percent who would vote to keep it. Another 14 percent were undecided.”

Abortion on the Ballot in South Dakota

South Dakota voters will now have the choice on whether the draconian law signed by Republican Governor Mike Rounds outlawing abortions remains the law of the land in South Dakota. That’s right, the Secretary of State of South Dakota, Chris Nelson, announced this morning that he has certified the petitions from the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families and will place HB 1215, the extreme ban on abortions on the November ballot.

From the AP:

Voters will have the final say on South Dakota’s tough new law that bans almost all abortions.

Secretary of State Chris Nelson said Monday that the law’s opponents had collected enough signatures to put a question on the Nov. 7 ballot asking voters if the law should go into effect as planned or be dumped.

The state’s abortion law, among the strictest in the nation, bans the procedure in all cases except when necessary to save a woman’s life, with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Supporters hoped it would prompt a court challenge that would give the U.S. Supreme Court an opportunity to overturn its 1973 Roe. v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.

Governor Mike Rounds = Out of Touch

A post by Matthew Slutsky

South Dakota: Out of Touch

As many of you know, South Dakota recently passed the most draconian anti-abortion law in the country. Just yesterday, The South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families said it turned in twice as many signatures as it needed to in order to hold a statewide ballot vote in November on whether to repeal this disgusting law. From the WaPo:

Jan Nicolay, co-chairwoman of the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families, said she believes it would be the nation’s first statewide election on abortion since Roe v. Wade. Opponents of the ban decided to pursue a popular vote instead of filing a lawsuit.

We would prefer this be dealt with by the people of the state of South Dakota and not spend a lot of money fighting a legal battle,” Nicolay said.

Leslee Unruh, an abortion opponent who lobbied for the ban, said she believes South Dakotans will do what is right. “I believe we are a pro-life state,” she said.

This is not a lost cause. We can change this awful law.

Is Tom Daschle Flirting Again?

Remember in 2004 when Tom Daschle dramatically announced that he would not run for President. Instead, he vowed to focus on leading the minority in the Senate to victory in 2004. We all know what happened instead- Daschle lost his seat to the much taller John Thune and now he works at a Starbucks in South Dakota.

But for real, what would the man who literally rolled over and played dead to George W. Bush after 9-11 and in the lead-up to the Iraq war be doing now?

THINKING ABOUT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, OF COURSE. Come on, is this a joke

Leaving aside the plausibility question, is the former maj./min. leader, who heads to IA, NH and MI beginning June 9, a Gingrich-esque book-deal flirter? A Gore-esque monocausual promotion whiz?

Or is he soberly considering a bid for the presidency?

Based on what he’s told his close friends, he’s clenched-jaw serious.

And Daschle’s decision will be guided, in part, on the results of the contested ‘06 primaries that Daschle, unlike most would-be ‘08ers, has waded into.
