A Monday Quote

“I often felt that if a piece of Wisconsin swiss cheese had taken the same positions I’ve taken, it would have elicited the same standing ovations.”

-Democratic Senator Russ Feingold in an email to suppporters explaining his decision not to run for President in ‘08.

United States Senator

Russ Feingold (D-WI) will NOT seek the nomination for President of the United States. Listen to DoubleSpeak’s interview with Sen. Feingold where he discusses the 2008 field.

More Cheese Please

Day 24
4:55 PM CT.

A Progressive Patriot

There aren’t a lot of politicians these days that you can truly look up to and believe in. The GOP has become a corrupt corporate patronage machine where its highly respected legislators vote for torture and the elimination of several civil rights. And sadly, many Democrats seem to aim for Republican-lite. But not Russ Feingold.

We just drove up to Lake Hallie, Wisconsin, just outside Eau Claire for a town hall discussion with the Senator. At the end we pulled him aside for a few minutes along with some local reporters for a few questions. Not the longest interview we’ve ever done, but I’m quite excited to put together the Wisconsin show now with Russ and AG candidate Kathleen Falk.

Folks up here in Wisconsin seem to stand by their political convictions.

BTW, check out this post by Chris Bowers on some extraordinarily exciting new poll numbers for the House candidates.

Now off to Minneapolis!

“My Life”

Day 21
4:58 PM CT.

(first post in Central Time!)

We are spending lots of time in our vehicle these days and therefore have lots of time to listen to good music and quality NPR programming. We also have a six-disk version of Bill Clinton’s book “My Life” which I’ve really been enjoying. We just spent the last two hours listening to President Clinton as he recounts memories of his childhood, his many electoral campaigns, and his first couple of years in office. We’ll keep you posted as to how the story plays out but right now I get the sense that he’ll win the 1996 election.

We just entered Wisconsin! We’ll spend a couple of days in the Badger State producing our next three episodes and doing some interviews with local and statewide elected officials. We’re working to try and interview Senator Russ Feingold which would be a real thrill for all of us.

Still Addicted
This pretty much sums up my weekend.

Ok, we’ll talk soon.

A Patriot Act To Like

PPF PAC

Senator Russ Feingold has upped the ante for the 2008 Presidential Sweepstakes by announcing that his Leadership PAC, Progressive Patriots Fund, will be creating a 15-member “Patriot Corps” to staff elections in Wisconsin and around the country to help Democrats win crucial offices.

Although the Feingold field program will help Democrats immediately in 2006, Feingold is certainly staffing up with an eye on 2008. It is certainly a wise move for the Feingold camp. The more progressives Feingold can elect in 2006, the more chits he will have to call in for a potential presidential bid in 2008. A field campaign also lets party establishment-types know that Feingold is serious about building the Democratic Party and not merely a candidate of the left-wing blogosphere.

Russ Feingold’s strong positions in favor of troop withdrawal, censure of George W. Bush and against the Patriot Act stand out among what could be a crowded Democratic field in 2008. DoubleSpeak will be keeping an eye on Feingold’s moves as 2008 approaches.

Feingold Walks Out

Proving once again that he cares about integrity and principles above political expediency, Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) walked out of the Judiciary Committee meeting today that was considering an anti-marriage equality amendment to the US Consitution. Despite acknowledgement by committee chairman Sen. Arlen Specter that he does not support the bill, derision by some conservatives, and an acknowledgement by most that the amendment has no chance of passing, Republicans are continuing to move forward with a bill based on hate to mollify their extreme right wing base.

Besides disagreeing with the subject of the amendment, Feingold’s protest was based on the movement of the hearing from the Senate Office Building to the President’s Room which “is not open to the public and does not even have enough chairs for every Senator on the committee to sit.”

Sen. Feingold’s office released this statement:

“Today’s markup of the constitutional amendment concerning marriage, in a small room off the Senate floor with only a handful of people other than Senators and their staffs present, was an affront to the Constitution. I objected to its consideration in such an inappropriate setting and refused to help make a quorum. I am deeply disappointed that the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee went forward with the markup over my objection. Unfortunately, the Majority Leader has set a politically motivated schedule for floor consideration of this measure that the Chairman felt compelled to follow, even though he says he opposes the amendment.

Constitutional amendments deserve the most careful and deliberate consideration of any matter that comes before the Senate. In addition to hearings and a subcommittee markup, such a measure should be considered by the Judiciary Committee in the light of day, open to the press and the public, with cameras present so that the whole country can see what is done. Open and deliberate debate on such an important matter cannot take place in a setting such as the one chosen by the Chairman of the Committee today.

The Constitution of the United States is an historic guarantee of individual freedom. It has served as a beacon of hope, an example to people around the world who yearn to be free and to live their lives without government interference in their most basic human decisions. I took an oath when I joined this body to support and defend the Constitution. I will continue to fight this mean-spirited, divisive, poorly drafted, and misguided amendment when it comes to the Senate floor.”

Feingold continues to stand up for the civil rights of all Americans.

Iowa Meet Russ…Russ Meet Iowa

Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) will travel to Iowa this weekend to speak at the University of Iowa and to campaign for Democratic Congressional candidates.

Sen. Feingold is most likely going to run for the Democratic nomination and as we all know, Iowa plays a pivotal role in the nomination process. Good luck in Iowa, Russ. Try the Jello salad - it’s delicious!

You can take a look at Sen. Feingold’s leadership Political Action Committee website, The Progressive Patriots Fund. Make sure to check out their very smart new web ad, “W”.

Feingold Takes Another Stand

Reports RawStory, Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) has announced his support for full gay marriage rights.

United States Senator Russ Feingold this week indicated that he not only opposes a constitutional amendment in Wisconsin to ban gay marriage and civil unions, but in fact, favors full marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples.

Calling such a ban a “mean-spirited attempt to divide Wisconsin,” Feingold urged constituents at a Paddock Lake “listening session” not to support it.

He went on to argue not just for civil unions, but gay marriage.

“Gay and lesbian couples should be able to marry and have access to the same rights, privileges and benefits that straight couples currently enjoy.” Feingold went on to add, “[This] kind of discrimination … has no place in our laws, especially in a progressive state like Wisconsin. The time has come to end this discrimination and the politics of divisiveness that has become part of this issue.”

The Senator went on to argue that religious groups do not have to recognize any civil marriage.

Huzzah Senator.

Feingold Not Alone

Since Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) announced on Sunday that he would be bringing forward a Senate resolution to censure the president for his warrantless domestic spying, the mainstream press has been filled with stories about Democrats running away from Sen. Feingold and general dissension in Democratic congressional offices. Just look at Memeorandum to see how pervasive this is. The AP reported today that “not a single Democrat has embraced” the legislation.

Turns out that’s not true.

Think Progress has the news today that two senators have praised the resolution, with Sen. Lincoln Chaffee (R-RI) the first to cross the aisle saying, “the resolution would be ‘positive’ if it fueled debate over the legality of some policies in the war on terrorism.” And despite Dana Milbank’s wishful headline in the Washington Post, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), has said he will vote for the measure.

“The president broke the law and he needs to be held accountable,” [Harkin] said. “Talk about high crimes and misdemeanors!” Harkin said he’ll vote for the Feingold resolution — if it comes up.

The tide is turning. Even Donna Brazile in Roll Call (subscription link) is finally calling for Congress to stand up to King George.

Democrats should understand the real issue. The point is not censure or impeachment; it is Congress’ lack of oversight and its failure to hold anyone accountable for major mistakes or missteps. And especially, it’s about clearly misleading the American public.
