Rendell Scores Touchdown Against Swann

It looks like Pennsylvania’s great Governor, Ed Rendell (D-PA) will soar to victory against ex- Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann (R).

In a new Rasmussen Reports poll, Rendell leads Swann by 20%.

We all know that Democratic Senate nominee Bob Casey is trying to ride the Governor’s long coattails into office and is therefore running the worst campaign in the history of Pennsylvania. This 20% spread is encouraging, not only for Rendell, but also for Casey.

Notes on Joe Sestak

Day 3
10:30 AM ET.

Joe Sestak Speaking to the Swarthmore College Dems

As promised, some notes and thoughts on Joe Sestak, the Democratic candidate opposing Curt Weldon in Pennsylvania’s 7th District. It’s an interesting district, made up of Delaware, Montgomery, and Chester counties and while the greater Philadelphia area has been trending blue for a while, Joe pointed out in his speech that there is only 22% Democratic voter registration. All three of us grew up no more than 15 minutes from the district. We talked to him on Tuesday night and should have the interview up at some point this weekend.

Joe, as he told the questioners to call him, entered the room around 9:30 pm or so after a long day of campaigning, looking tired but relaxed in blue shirtsleeves. He’d done his first event after declaring to run with the Swarthmore Dems so he was amazed at how far they’d come. The polls have been tightening and Joe raised more money than Weldon in the last quarter. He gave us his basic stump speech, though he may have made it a bit more wonky for the college crowd.

The beginning basically told his story: three plus decades of miliary service in the Navy, fighting in Afghanistan, and the sense of honor and community he gained from his service. He told the story of his daughter’s sickness and how it inspired him to run when he saw another sick little boy “on the other side of the curtain” in the hospital, surrounded by social workers discussing whether or not he could stay at the hospital due to his lack of health insurance. Admiral Sestak was lucky enough to have wonderful healthcare for his daughter through his taxpayer funded health insurance. “I owe this country…I owe the people,” he said.

My favorite quote? “All the military officers are Democrats, they just don’t know it yet.”

And he told us of his sense of an American spirt and determination that is in real danger due to the disaster of the Iraq war. He called for our troops to be out within a year.

Though he’d been up since sunrise greeting commuters at the train station, he then took questions from the audience where he talked about Darfur, Medicare Part D and the “donut hole,” the deficit, and even his support for the International Criminal Court.

Joe Sestak is gonna make a great Congressman. Help him out.

Tired, But Resolved…

Day 2
7:04 PM ET.

Hello to all. What a day. Two interviews, lots of production and website work. You might notice that the template on the website looks weird now - don’t worry, we’re working on it. We have some great friends who are working overtime to get the new site up for us.

Done for the night. Production tomorrow morning and then a ride up to Phoenixville, PA to meet Lois Murphy in the afternoon. We are looking forward to that.

Enjoy the night.

Pat Murphy, Morning Interview

Day 2
9:10 AM ET.

Mornin’ sunshine.

Just did an early morning interview with Patrick Murphy. He’s running in PA-8, one of the hottest contests in America.

Murphy was down to earth, had a great Philly accent, and definitely won’t be pushed around by his opponent. He’s badass and needs to win this race.

We are headed back to downtown Philly to finish the show on Net Neutrality and we’ll have that posted by late-afternoon.

Hit us with some comments on the blog- we’re getting lonely in the minivan. While I was excited about the trip, I definitely take into account the fact that I would have to spend all this time with Peter and Josh. They’re nice people, but it’s only day two and I want them to go away. Just kidding.

Ok, getting onto I-95 South headed back to the city. We will write more later.

Check out Murphy’s op-ed in today’s Philly Daily News with co-author Senator John Kerry on Iraq.

Good Casey Ad!

Finally, something good from the Casey campaign.

Check out his latest ad. I have no idea how large the media buy is; I’m in Philly now and I haven’t seen the ad on TV. In fact, I don’t think Casey has been on air in the Philly market since he announced his candidacy.

Bob Casey, Wake-Up

Dear Mr. Casey-

With an ad like this, Radical Rick Santorum is making you look dumb and weak. Please, fight back.

Best,

Matt

Check out Santorum’s new ad against Casey below. It’s clever and I fear that Casey isn’t going to fire back with any real chutzpah.

Carney On Air In PA-10

Lieutenant Commander in the United States Naval Reserve, Middle Eastern intelligence and counterterrorism expert, and Penn State professor Chris Carney (D) is running against batsh*t crazy GOP incumbent Don Sherwood in the Pennsylvania 10th District. You may remember Sherwood from when DC police responded to him choking his 29-year-old mistress. Yeah, that guy.

Carney is first on the air in the 10th with this simple and positive ad emphasizing his military service:

Like Atrios said, this is a race where your dollars can help make a real difference. Contribute to Chris Carney.

Bob Casey: “Come on, Dude”

Bob Casey in PA
“Stop Smiling, Start Fighting”

If I could look Bob Casey in the eye right now, I’d simply say:

“Come on dude, don’t screw this up.”

If you’ve been following my commentary on this race then you know how frustrated I’ve been with Casey’s candidacy. Instead of flying out of the gates and calling Radical Rick Santorum what he is– an out of touch, fanatical wing nut who does not represent the people of Pennsylvania– Casey has opted instead for a more cordial approach.

I am sure there’s polling data that shows how Pennsylvania voters want to talk about “issues” and not play dirty politics. However, I’m sure there are people within the Casey camp who want a more hard-lined stance on Radical Rick’s extremist positions and statements. However, they are not being heard and this campaign, instead, is running itself into the ground.

Please please please Mr. Casey- you must win this race. For the sake of this country, you must win. Your current approach is not working. If you want to unseat Radical Rick, you must puff out your chest and begin running the kind of campaign that can topple a seasoned politician who doesn’t deserve another term in the Senate.

The polls are tightening with the latest Quinnipiac Poll showing Santorum making gains in the race against Casey. The race now stands at 48- 42 in favor of Casey.

From Quinnipiac:

“Casey still has the advantage as long as Santorum’s job approval is mixed and his favorability rating remains in negative territory. But three in 10 likely voters say they don’t know enough about Casey to form an opinion, and the key to the election may well be how those voters will swing once they get to know him. Santorum gets no help from President Bush, whose approval rating remains near record lows,” Richards added.

Pennsylvania registered voters give Santorum a split 42 – 44 percent approval rating, compared to a negative 38 – 45 percent score June 21, the incumbent’s lowest approval rating ever. He gets a negative 34 – 40 percent favorability rating among likely voters, with 17 percent mixed and 9 percent who haven’t heard enough to form an opinion.

This is not just a lefty rant. This is politics. This race is slipping away from us and it’s time to start fighting back. No more poll tested mumble jumble, Mr. Casey. Get out there, fight, and tell the voters in Pennsylvania that Radical Rick doesn’t deserve to represent them in the United States Senate.
