What Is Norm Coleman Hiding From?

If you’ve been following the Senate race between Al Franken and Norm Coleman in Minnesota than you know things have gotten strange and rather ugly for Coleman in recent days.

Yesterday a video was posted on MNpublius.com of investigative reporter’s attempting to ask Norm Coleman a question about money his wife received. As you can see, Coleman clearly did not want to answer these questions and was hurried into SUV’s to flee the scene.

In the final days of his competitive race, what is Norm Coleman hiding from?

Maybe Next Time Mr. President

One of my favorite politicians we encountered on the road was Representative-elect Keith Ellison from Minneapolis. The man is a true progressive in the spirit of Paul Wellstone and in the hour we watched him interact with a crowd on the issue of environmental justice I came away quite impressed with his honesty, his commitment to his constituents, and his seriousness about what he is trying to do. I was extraordinarily happy to hear his name announced on election night.

Of course, if you’re only following corporate media sources you probably don’t know anything about him other than he is a Muslim, and the first one in Congress at that. Which is enough for some to accuse him of “working with our enemies.” Yes, Glenn Beck is a massive douchebag.

If that wasn’t enough to get you interested in Keith, check out what he did last night.

Keith Ellison, the first Muslim ever elected to Congress, hasn’t even taken office yet, but he already appears to be charting his own route in Congress. The Associated Press reports that Ellison skipped a swanky private White House reception for other freshman Congressman hosted by President Bush — and went to a reception for the AFL-CIO instead. “It wasn’t even a close call,” Ellison says. “Maybe one day I’ll get to meet the president. He’s the president, and I respect him in his role as the president, but I have exceedingly sharp differences with him on a policy level.”

We’ve Given Up

Day 30
3:58 PM CT.

On our health.

We finally cracked and veered off of I-90 W to eat at McDonald’s. Ewwwww. Due to some great enablers (Andy, Kathryn, and Chris) we have a gift card to the “Golden Arches” and while we’ve tried to stay away from the junk, we all felt like today was the day to give in.

We’ve just entered Iowa, my home away from home. I am looking forward to seeing good friends and getting the download on the political scene as we head towards the 2008 caucus. We will head first to Sioux City and do an interview tonight with Democratic Gubernatorial candidate, Chet Culver. Then, we’ll go down to Des Moines to spend a couple of days producing and interviewing interesting folks including Bruce Braley in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.

We are on the last disc of Bill Clinton’s “My Life” and I can’t wait to see how it ends! I hope y’all are having a good time reading about our journey and as we get down to the end of this election cycle, it’s even more critical for every person in this country to tune in and get to work.

I am truly concerned that Democrats are going to get complacent and feel like there’s no way we can lose. THIS IS JUST NOT THE CASE and we can’t stop fighting for every vote in every district until the last polling booth is closed on November 7th. Then, we’ll drink.

Day Trippin’

Day 30
3:15 PM CT.

It’s a driving day as we leave the Twin Cities and head to Iowa.

I-90 W in Minnesota

Minnesota is such a politically fascinating state. It’s a bastion of liberalism and even old fashioned socialism in the cities but is still incredibly rural and in many ways, conservative.

Clinton’s talking impeachment and the 1998 elections. Those crazy midterms…

Vegan Organic Waffles

Day 29
12:26 PM CT.

Last night, Team DoubleSpeak attended a town hall meeting on environmental justice. The featured speaker was MN-05 Congressional candidate Keith Ellison. Keith did a very good job in that meeting and we had a nice interview with him after the questions ended. If elected in November, Keith will be the first Muslim to ever serve in the U.S. Congress and he will be the first non-white person ever elected to federal office from the great state of Minnesota.

Keith on DoubleSpeak

Minneapolis is a pretty hip city. I’m not even talking mid-west hip, I mean legit hip. Just how hip is this great city? Well…this morning I ate a vegan, organic, fruit covered waffle at a local corner restaurant. It was delicious! If you ever come to this city, you must try the waffles.

Today we’re locked up in Reed’s apartment, producing and writing shows. We’ll be in Minneapolis for another twenty-four hours and then we’ll head due south towards Sioux City, IA.

Tonight, we are on the Peter B. Collins show for the second time. You can listen here. We are slated to go on at 3:00pm Pacific or 6:00pm Eastern. Make sure you tune in. If you miss it, Josh will record it and we’ll put it up on the website ASAP.

Old Coot Quote Of The Day

“[Tester] reminds me of a good friend of mine that I had in the United States Senate . . . his name is John Wellst–, er, uh, Wellstone.”
