Thursday’s Quote

“We have two factions of media in Boston. On the one hand, we have the Hillary-loving, Ted Kennedy apologists. And on the other, we have the liberals.”

Just try not to die

Think George W. Bush has screwed you enough for one lifetime? Well, now he wants to screw you when you’re dead too! That’s right, the recently released FY ‘07 budget calls for the elimination of a $255 lump-sum death payment that has been part of American’s Social Security for more than 50 years.

If Congress passes this budget, Bush proposes to:

The two proposals would save a combined $3.4 billion over the next decade, according to administration estimates.

Also included in this article, a quote that we should all be proud of. The tides are truly turning when these types of quotes are becoming more commonplace in the mainstream media:

Democrats rallied in opposition, and Republicans shrank from the political challenge of remaking a program that provides benefits to millions of elderly voters.

Stoller: Some Real Questions

Matt Stoller, of the newly rebranded My Direct Democracy, attended a meeting of a bunch of bloggers and media types to discuss blogging, mainstream journalism, and the interaction of the two. Inevitably the discussion turned towards Washington Post ombudsman Deborah Howell and the recent dust-up over her false assertion that Jack Ambramoff “directed” money towards Democrats. Despite evidence to the contrary, Howell parroted the right wing talking point that this is a bipartisan scandal. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Go read Matt’s piece as he addresses the problems with modern journalism, hope for citizen driven journalism and blogging, and how this all ties in to the broken Democratic party apparatus.

Stick with us as we try and fix it folks.
