A popular figure in the nation’s second-largest city, analysts expect Villaraigosa to have a promising future in national politics or in statewide office in California. He is widely popular among Hispanic voters, who make up an increasingly large percentage of Democratic voters in California and many other states. In 2004, 21 percent of California voters were Hispanic, according to exit polls there.
Villaraigosa’s endorsement of Clinton is not unexpected; he lavished praise on the New York senator at a campaign event in Los Angeles in March, calling her campaign “fighting for a brighter and cleaner future for all our children.” And last month, his top political consultant, Ace Smith, joined the Clinton campaign as its California director.
What do you think…could be a very interesting choice for VP for HRC? Thoughts on this?
Why am I so excited? Well, Angelides’ number one supporter was DoubleSpeak’s favorite former Greek Presidential nominee from Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis!
Good job guys, now on to Novemeber to beat Schwarzenegger.
In perhaps the most watched special election, Republican lobbyist Brian Bilbray beat progressive candidate Francine Busby in the California 50th district, an area well known for its former indicted congressman, Rep. Duke Cunningham. Despite campaigning in a solidly Republican district, and facing a barrage of $4.5 million in ads from the NRCC (20% of their cash on hand), Francine almost made this race her own. The Republicans dropped 18 points in this district since 2002!
Keep your eyes open for evidence that Independents broke for the Democratic candidate in this race by a factor of 9-1. Check out Swing State Project and MyDD for more.
On June 6, 2006, California voters will head to the polls to decide who will take on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the November general election. The two candidates vying for the Democratic nomination are State Treasurer Phil Angelides and State Controller Steve Westly.
Choice “A”, State Treasurer Phil Angelides, wants to raise taxes on the wealthy, legalize gay marriage, and give driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants. He’s a staunch liberal who calls himself the “anti-Arnold.”
Choice “B”, State Controller Steve Westly, wants to reinvent how government spends money, delivers services, and provides benefits. He’s a fiscal conservative who describes himself as “a different kind of Democrat.”
Great exchange between Democrats Phil Angelides and Steve Westly in the recent televised debate out in California. Angelides and Westly are running a tight race for the chance to beat Arnold Schwarzenegger in November.
