Maybe Next Time Mr. President

One of my favorite politicians we encountered on the road was Representative-elect Keith Ellison from Minneapolis. The man is a true progressive in the spirit of Paul Wellstone and in the hour we watched him interact with a crowd on the issue of environmental justice I came away quite impressed with his honesty, his commitment to his constituents, and his seriousness about what he is trying to do. I was extraordinarily happy to hear his name announced on election night.

Of course, if you’re only following corporate media sources you probably don’t know anything about him other than he is a Muslim, and the first one in Congress at that. Which is enough for some to accuse him of “working with our enemies.” Yes, Glenn Beck is a massive douchebag.

If that wasn’t enough to get you interested in Keith, check out what he did last night.

Keith Ellison, the first Muslim ever elected to Congress, hasn’t even taken office yet, but he already appears to be charting his own route in Congress. The Associated Press reports that Ellison skipped a swanky private White House reception for other freshman Congressman hosted by President Bush — and went to a reception for the AFL-CIO instead. “It wasn’t even a close call,” Ellison says. “Maybe one day I’ll get to meet the president. He’s the president, and I respect him in his role as the president, but I have exceedingly sharp differences with him on a policy level.”

Beaten…But Not Defeated

Darcy Burner; the young, charismatic, smart woman running for Congress in Washington State’s 8th district has lost to her Republican opponent Dave Reichert. The election went into overtime, as it was too close to call on election night.

This really sucks for Team America. Darcy would have made an excellent Congresswoman. However, all is not lost. Our hope is that she will run again in 2008 and win!

Darcy appeared on DoubleSpeak a couple months back. Take a listen to our interview.

The New Senate

America has new committee chairs in the U.S. Senate. Here they are, folks.

* Appropriations: Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV)
* Environment and Public Works: Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
* Finance: Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT)
* Foreign Relations: Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE)
* Judiciary: Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
* Intelligence: Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)

A note from Political Wire:

The committee assignments given to the freshmen senators were also released. Of note: despite the fact that Harry Reid promised before the election that, if elected, Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) would be given a seat on the Appropriations Committee as soon as possible, he did not receive such an assignment yesterday.

The New York Times has more.

Keith Ellison: MN-05

As expected, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives Keith Ellison was elected to serve as the first Muslim in history in Tuesday’s election. The New York Times has an article discussing both the national and international reaction to this historic victory.

We met Keith and if you haven’t heard our interview with him yet, you should. He is something else.

From the NYTimes:

But Muslims across America, and even overseas, celebrated his election Tuesday as the first Muslim in Congress, representing Minnesota’s Fifth District in the House of Representatives, as a sign of acceptance and a welcome antidote to their faith’s sinister image.

“It’s a step forward; it gives the Muslims a little bit of a sense of belonging,” said Osama A. Siblani, the publisher of The Arab American News, a weekly in Dearborn, Mich., a state with one of the heaviest concentrations of Muslims. “It is also a signal to the rest of the world that America has nothing against Muslims. If we did, he wouldn’t have been elected.”

Mr. Ellison’s success was front-page news in several of the Arab world’s largest newspapers and high in the lineup on television news programs.

Few of his supporters expect Mr. Ellison, a 43-year-old criminal defense lawyer who converted to Islam as a 19-year-old college student, to effect any policy shifts in areas of concern to Muslim Americans, particularly when it comes to foreign policy and civil rights.

Good Ol’ Fashion Thumpin’

“You look at it race by race, it was close. The cumulative effect, however, was not too close. It was a thumping.”

It’s Morning Again In Ohio

Ohio Democratic Donkey

After being shutout for every statewide office three consecutive election cycles in a row, the once-moribund Ohio Democratic Party is not only alive, but thriving.

Congressman Sherrod Brown easily defeated incumbent Republican Mike DeWine for U.S. Senate, and Ohio elected Ted Strickland its first Democratic governor in sixteen years in an enormous landslide. Democrat Marc Dann also defeated a giant in Ohio Republican politics, Betty Montgomery, to become Ohio’s first Democratic top cop in twelve years. After a decade of Republican scandal, Dann’s oversight is sorely needed.

In a huge victory, Ohioans also chose Democrat Jennifer Brunner to be the next Secretary of State. You can listen to Jennifer Brunner’s candidate interview with DoubleSpeak here. This means the 2008 presidential election will be conducted without the disenfranchisement and dirty tricks gubernatorial loser Ken Blackwell played with the job against John Kerry in 2004. The Secretary of State is a key official in Ohio as one of 5 members of the Ohio Apportionment Board. This board does Ohio’s Congressional and state legislative redistricting every ten years, and is composed of the Governor, Auditor, Secretary of State, and one legislator of each party. Republican State Representative Mary Taylor squeaked out a victory in the State Auditor’s race, so if redistricting were done today, Democrats would have a 3-2 edge and perhaps be able to undo some of the damage of Republican gerrymandering after the 2000 Census.

Yesterday proved Ohio is very much a purple state that will be hotly contested again in the 2008 presidential election. Democrats are much better prepared to win Ohio in 2008 with Governor Ted Strickland and Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner leading the charge.
