The Truth About Joe The Plumber
Ok, maybe not the whole truth but this is great.
Ok, maybe not the whole truth but this is great.
Joe The Plumber hates taxes. Whose plan would he most benefit from?
Via Jake Tapper:
ABC News’ Chris Bury is outside Toledo, near the home of Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, aka “Joe the Plumber,” and reports that Wurzelbacher — such a key part of Sen. John McCain’s critique of Sen. Barack Obama’s economic proposals — acknowledged that he wants to purchase the plumbing business for $250-280,000, not that he would net that much in profits.
He would make much less, he said.
Which would seem to indicate that he would be eligible for an Obama tax cut, not that he would be subject to the tax increase from 36% to 39% Obama would impose on those making more than $200,000 per person, or $250,000 per family.
Wurzelbacher this morning told ABC News’ Diane Sawyer that he was talking about, in Diane’s words, the prospect, the hope that someday he would make $250,000.
“Well, exactly,” he said. “Exactly. I mean not that I don’t want to be taxed. You have to be taxed. But to — just because you work a little harder to have a little bit more money taken from you, I mean, that’s scary. You know as opposed to other people. I worked hard for it. Why should I be taxed more than other people?”
Diane asked, “if those people should not be taxed additionally, even though they’re in the top 5% of America, what about people who make $1 million? Or $5 million?”
“Well, I mean, quite honestly, why should they be penalized for being successful?” Wurzelbacher asked. “I mean, that’s what you’re telling me. That’s what it sounds like you’re saying. That’s wrong. Because you’re successful, you have to pay more than everybody else? We all live in this country. It’s a basic right. And Obama wants to take that basic right and penalize me for it, is what it comes down to. That’s a very socialist view and it’s incredibly wrong. I mean, $250,000 now. What if he decides, well you know $150,000, you’re pretty rich too. Let’s go ahead and lower it again. You know it’s a slippery slope. When’s it going to stop?”
UPDATE: Joe The Plumber isn’t really a plumber, after all. LINK.
In just a few hours John McCain and Barack Obama will meet for their third and final debate. Given the anxiety that exists tonight in America, this debate will likely focus on the economy and our current credit crisis. I won’t blame the media nor will I blame the candidates for spending their time on this issue. However, I believe voters and the candidates ignore, at great peril, the war in Iraq and a debate about the sickening mentality that led our country into this deadly conflict.
Let’s not forget about the war in Iraq.
To the troops who watch tonight’s debate in far away and unfamiliar places we say thank you for your service and we’ll get you home soon.
For our Bay Area friends looking for entertainment for tonight’s debate. No word yet whether they will have another TV with the Phillies game on.
In case you hadn’t already heard: Hungry for Obama is hosting a BBQ and debate viewing (on a 63-inch TV with speakers) in Dolores Park (San Francisco) tonight. The BBQ will start at 5 pm; the debate is from 6-7:30. It should be a lot of fun — we had nearly 100 people last week for the second debate. If we’re lucky, there’ll even be some post-debate slacklining.
Come find us at the southern end of the park near the playground.
We’ll have a laptop on hand so that everyone can use their credit cards to make contributions to the Obama campaign. ($20 minimum, please.) If you have a laptop and wireless modem and you’d be willing to bring them so that we can have more than one Internet connection available, we’d be extremely grateful.
The food will be free, with small contributions welcome from those so inclined.
See you there!
Hungry For Obama has been organizing dinner party fundraisers for the Obama campaign over the last month, raising over $36,000 in that time.
I’m sure little Sarah McCain won’t ever be mad at her father for this one…
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. — A new father has secretly named his baby girl Sarah McCain Palin after the Republican ticket for president and vice president.
Mark Ciptak of Elizabethton put that name on the documents for the girl’s birth certificate, ignoring the name Ava Grace, which he and his wife had picked earlier.
“I don’t think she believes me yet,” he told the Kingsport Times-News for a story to be published Tuesday. “It’s going to take some more convincing.”
Added Ciptak, “I took one for the cause.”

IndieWIRE, one of the leading online new sources for independent films did a little write-up about The Delegates this past week. Check it out:
“The Delegates”
Highlighting the Democratic National Convention, Cameron Hickey’s documentary promises to give a behind-the-scenes look at how the delegates experience the convention, while critiquing our democratic process.
Having focused on human rights and social injustices in past films (”Garlic and Watermelons,” “The Alphabet Book”) with producing partner/wife, Lauren Feeney, the thought of doing a film on politics had never been of interest for the two until podcasting earlier in the year at the New Hampshire primaries for DoubleSpeak, an online radio show created by political insiders Matthew and Peter Slutsky. “We knew we were going to the convention and it occurred to me I wanted to do something that had a little more staying power than something that was just going to be interesting on that day,” says Hickey a few weeks before heading to Denver for the convention.
To find their subjects they sent out an e-mail blast to ten percent of the just under 5,000 delegates going to the convention. Hickey says they heard back from 55 interested delegates, including Hilary Clinton supporters who converted over to Barack Obama (some begrudgingly) during the convention, the mother of a solider killed in Iraq, a transgender delegate, a gay Unitarian Universalist Minster and a Iraq/Afghanistan war vet.
Though Hickey is aware of the historical significance of this convention, he says that isn’t what motivated him to make the film. “We want to make something that is a bit different from what you’re going to get out of the news media,” he says. “I would love to be filming one of our subjects and have Obama in the background because we’re not focusing on him while everyone else is.”
Financed through online donations, the film was shot on three HD cameras by Hickey, Feeney and D.P. Jason Martin. Hickey is realistic of his film’s distribution possibilities and hopes to build an audience through the Internet and self-distribute the film. It’s co-produced by DoubleSpeak and Hickey/Feeney’s company Pattern Films.

Many of you have been asking us about the progress of the film, so here’s a brief update…
We are in the midst of finishing the process of digitizing and organizing the dozens and dozens of hours of film that we shot in Denver. Cameron is working hard to get this done, as well as looking for a top-notch editor to begin cutting some trailers for the film, as well as other highlight reels we can use to begin promoting the project and the post-production.
Over the coming months, we will be working very hard to put the film together, raise the money we’ll need, work out the music, licensing, etc. It will be an exciting and exhausting, but we have a great team and we are confident that this film is going to be a big hit in 2009. We want to once again thank everyone for their support and make sure you stay tune for more updates on DoubleSpeak and The Delegates in the weeks and months to come.
A rough night for Gov. Sarah Palin in my hometown of Philadelphia!
