Harry Reid’s In Charge

The soon-to-be Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will pressure President Bush to answer the tough questions on his ’stay the course’ Iraq strategy.

America, we are in better hands now. I hope the Democrats can step up and find a solution to this war to get our brave troops home as soon as possible. President Bush and the GOP Congress lost this war (not the troops, the politicians) and now it is up to the Democrats to save the day.

I believe the GOP will fall into political obscurity for many years to come. They are the feeble minded party that was faced with the challenges of the new world order following September 11, 2001 and they have failed this country and the world.

George W. Bush: worst President in American history.

Reports Are Swirling

that “Palestinian terror groups and security organizations in the Gaza Strip received $2 million from a U.S. source in exchange for the release of Fox News employees Steve Centanni and Olaf Wiig, who were kidnapped last summer.” That source is said to be someone with ties to FOX News. More from WorldNetDaily.

What Has John Edwards Been Up To?

Oh, the pictures you find on Flickr.

This one is of John Edwards doing some sort of labor. Very Presidential.

He was on The Daily Show last night and apparently hinted at a 2008 run. I missed it because I fell asleep at 10pm. My sleeping patterns haven’t been the same since the “One Minivan, One America Tour.”

Beaten…But Not Defeated

Darcy Burner; the young, charismatic, smart woman running for Congress in Washington State’s 8th district has lost to her Republican opponent Dave Reichert. The election went into overtime, as it was too close to call on election night.

This really sucks for Team America. Darcy would have made an excellent Congresswoman. However, all is not lost. Our hope is that she will run again in 2008 and win!

Darcy appeared on DoubleSpeak a couple months back. Take a listen to our interview.

The New Senate

America has new committee chairs in the U.S. Senate. Here they are, folks.

* Appropriations: Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV)
* Environment and Public Works: Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
* Finance: Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT)
* Foreign Relations: Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE)
* Judiciary: Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
* Intelligence: Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)

A note from Political Wire:

The committee assignments given to the freshmen senators were also released. Of note: despite the fact that Harry Reid promised before the election that, if elected, Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) would be given a seat on the Appropriations Committee as soon as possible, he did not receive such an assignment yesterday.

The New York Times has more.

Abramoff Goes To Prison

Goodbye for now, sweet prince.

Jack Abramoff corrupted our political system. He owes every single American an apology. Now, he’ll have plenty of time to think about his actions when he’s sitting in a jail cell for the next six years. He deserved more, but we’ll take what we can get.

Abramoff reports to prison today.

Jack Abramoff, the lobbyist known for lavishing politicians with football tickets or whisking them away on exotic golf junkets, will start life Wednesday with a new identity: federal inmate No. 27593-112.

Abramoff is to report to federal prison to begin serving a nearly six-year prison sentence for a fraudulent deal to buy a fleet of casino ships in Florida. He also is awaiting sentencing for corrupting government officials and their staff members.

If it were up to the Justice Department, Abramoff wouldn’t be heading to prison — at least not yet. He could hold the key to a sweeping corruption case involving Congress, members of the Bush administration and their aides — and prosecutors said putting their star witness behind bars would impede the investigation.

But a Miami federal judge refused to delay the sentence, meaning Abramoff’s cooperation will have to continue from prison. Abramoff’s lawyers had no comment.

Abramoff was originally assigned to a federal prison in Pennsylvania about four hours away from Washington. Prosecutors wanted him assigned to a prison in Cumberland, Maryland, about two hours away.

The Justice Department said the issue has been resolved and, though the Bureau of Prisons will not comment on where Abramoff will report, prison officials began making preparations for a crush of reporters outside the Cumberland prison.

Abramoff enjoyed access and influence across Capitol Hill, from his close ties to congressmen, to his hundreds of contacts with White House officials. He kept his powerful friends flush with campaign cash, gifts and trips such as a $92,000 chartered jet to Scotland for a golf outing with Rep. Bob Ney, Bush administration official David Safavian and congressional aides.

Former NYC Mayor

Rudy Giuliani (R-NYC) will set up a Presidential Exploratory Committee. That’s right folks, Rudy’s in! 2008, here we come!

Republican Senator

Mel Martinez will be the next head of the Republican National Committee. We are still waiting for a link to the story but this appointment does come as a suprise as it’s been rumored that Michael Steele was next in line for the position of Chairman.

Democratic Leader

Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has backed Rep. Jack Murtha (D-PA) in his bid for House Majority Leader. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) is next in line the position and Pelosi’s decision to back Murtha is seen as a bold move in the weeks leading up to her taking power as the first female Speaker of the House.

A Monday Quote

“I often felt that if a piece of Wisconsin swiss cheese had taken the same positions I’ve taken, it would have elicited the same standing ovations.”

-Democratic Senator Russ Feingold in an email to suppporters explaining his decision not to run for President in ‘08.
