Out Of Breath…

Day 36
2:18 PM MT.

Being on the road (and eating 640 calorie muffins) doesn’t exactly “promote” physical fitness and it can be tough for a person to stay in shape. Yet, just this morning Peter turned to me and alleged, “I feel like I could go out and run a mile!”

Well, we just pulled off on a scenic lookout heading west on I-90 and our collective out-of-shapeness is now confirmed. We dug out the old pigskin from the back of the minivan for a quick toss and things got interesting when we all tried to run for more than 40 seconds. Let’s put it this way: I am winded and just want to nap.

We are on an absolutely gorgeous drive from Sioux City, IA to Montana. Currently making good time (surprisingly little traffic, ha) and now headed to the Badlands National Park to see some sights.

This has been my favorite drive so far and we are taking some time to actually stop and “smell the roses” (thanks D.B.S.).

Scenic View

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions for places and things to do whilst on this drive and keep reading! We are going to produce an episode of DoubleSpeak this evening and we’ll have it up for you in the next day.

Long Drive, Little Internet

Day 36
12:22 PM CT.

The Three, well Four, Amigos

I can’t even imagine what this type of tour will be like a few years down the line with ever more portable audio equipment, faster computers, smaller cameras, and some type of true broadband connection. We could do amazing real time reporting and communication. Of course we’re somewhat limited by our dial-up speed connection.

It is an amazing day. Warm without a cloud and the sky. Watch DoubleSpeak Go!

Cruise With Me

Day 35
7:01 PM CT.

The first of many sunsets that we’ll experience from the car over the next few days.

Sunset

Tomorrow we’re leaving Sioux City, IA to drive across South Dakota, through Wyoming, and on to Montana. As much as this trip is about working, it’d be a crime to do this trip and not stop at the world famous locations we’ll be passing in the next few days. We’re definitely going to the Badlands and Mt. Rushmore as well as the Crazy Horse Memorial. Anyone have any other recommendations? I’m about to spend some time looking through Let’s Go Roadtripping USA for ideas. This is the part of the trip I’ve always anticipated the most.

Sadly we’re expecting to struggle with the Internet connection for the next week at least as it’s only going to get worse. We’ll still be blogging but it remains to be seen how we’ll do with photos and episodes.

The Muffin That Almost Killed Peter

Day 35
5:40 PM CT.

They say that if it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger. Well, that wise wisdom is certainly appropriate in some situations. However, this morning I found myself face-to-face with something that really almost killed me - and oddly enough, I don’t feel any stronger.

After our morning interview with the good people at AFSCME IOWA, we stopped at a Casey’s (think 7-11 meets WAWA) to grab a cup of coffee and something to munch on. Josh and I both purchased muffins from the baked goods/pastry section of the store. Check it out.

The 640 Calorie Muffin

Well, that bugger nearly killed me. Well, maybe not an immediate death, but this muffin, packed with a whopping 640 calories and almost 40 grams of fat was just too much for this guy (and Josh) to take down. We threw them out in the trash. I need the occasional fix of junk food, but that muffin was just a little extreme.

We finished up our interview with Bruce Braley from the Iowa 1st and we’re now headed all the way back to Sioux City, where we will get a couple of hours sleep before beginning the epic trek west towards Montana. We’re like Lewis and Clark, but fatter and a little more Jewish.

Iowa has been amazing, as always. I spent some much needed time this weekend with Laura, my very understanding girlfriend who came to visit from Philly. You can check out pictures from our brief visit to the Ankeny pumpkin patch on the DoubleSpeak flickr page)

I’m really looking forward to getting out to Big Sky Country and seeing some old friends and meeting some up and coming candidates who are working hard to change the political landscape in Montana and the Mountain West.

Wish you could all see what I’m seeing: rolling corn fields, lots of cows and a really stunning sunset. Oh, and did I mention - listen to DoubleSpeak’s new Wisconsin episode!

“The Google” Maps Are For Kids

Think Progress has the video:

Transcript:

HOST:I’m curious, have you ever googled anybody? Do you use Google?

BUSH: Occasionally. One of the things I’ve used on the Google is to pull up maps. It’s very interesting to see — I’ve forgot the name of the program — but you get the satellite, and you can — like, I kinda like to look at the ranch. It remind me of where I wanna be sometimes.

Chicken Skewers And A Dream

Day 35
12:43 PM CT.

While there’s no doubt that we’ve been on a true road trip for over a month, I feel like today is when the driving really begins. I am also starting to feel the time crunch as the days are peeling away towards November 7th and I want to make sure we get everywhere we want to be by E-day.

We left Des Moines, IA this morning after an extremely comfortable stay with a gracious host and true friend in Des Moines. David- you are a golden g-d and I can’t wait to see you again soon.

We are headed to Davenport, IA to interview Bruce Braley, candidate for the U.S. House in Iowa’s 1st district. For those of you who know the geography of Iowa, Davenport is on the far eastern edge of the state so we are booking it across I-80 E to make it there by 3:30 PM.

Braley is at a forum on Stem Cell research and will be joined by Colorado Congresswoman Diana DeGette. If we can talk to her today then we’re really killing two birds with one stone as we’ll be in Colorado too!

One piece of sad news I have is that there’s a good chance that one or more of us may not be able to finish this trip due to probable overdose on chicken skewers. Yeah, that’s right. The other night we were given roughly 50 grilled chicken kabobs that were leftover from an event that our friend organized in Des Moines. They are absolutely delicious and all three of us have eaten over a dozen so far today. This could be a long day!

Ok, so we’re going to Davenport now and then turning west and heading ALL THE WAY to Sioux City. We’ll arrive in Sioux City late tonight, have another wonderful night at Roger and Anita Wendt’s lovely home, and then tomorrow morning hop in the minivan and begin the 1,000+ mile drive to Montana.

Here we go…

Republican Sleaze Machine Runs At Full Steam

WI Assembly Speaker John Gard

Knowing they are on the verge of suffering massive election losses at every level of government, the Republicans have reached the point where, monkey-like, in many campaigns they are simply flinging their own waste at the wall and hoping something sticks.

It would obviously be impossible to chronicle every ad of this caliber in one brief blog post. Nor would every negative ad qualify; political realism dictates that many ads from both sides will be riddled with remarkable truth-stretching. We speak now only of ads that contain outright lies or logic so laughably flawed that it would get one expelled from a first-year philosophy course at any decent university.

One prime example is a recent ad run by the NRSC claiming Ohio Senate candidate, Rep. Sherrod Brown, hadn’t paid his unemployment taxes in 13 years. And although Mike DeWine improbably told Ohioans to “read his lips,” (always a good idea for Republican politicians), the ads were false and TV stations pulled them shortly before the NRSC did. This ad was so egregious it earned DeWine the appellation of “Mud-Loving Mike DeWine” from the Dayton Daily News.

But our favorite comes from Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional district, where the NRCC has engaged in bizarre flights of fantasy to discredit the honorable life of businessman and physician, Dr. Steve Kagen. The first claim was that Kagen was a big bully for forcing patients who stiffed him to pay up; as The Capital Times’ Joel McNally noted, this is surely a novel argument coming from Republicans, who have otherwise rarely been known to side with the Jean Valjeans of this world.

When that didn’t work, Republicans have settled for trying to impugn Steve Kagen’s character using the tried-and-true trickery of guilt by association. Since Steve Kagen’s lawyer has done criminal law work, says the NRCC, Kagen’s evil-doing mind surely holds a vast reservoir of sympathy for serial killers and rapists. This claim is of course preposterous, but is an excellent sign of how desperate the GOP is and why it must lose this November.

But Will Our Votes Count?

Both political parties are working hard to ensure that Americans go out en masse on November 7th to cast their votes. However, will the votes be counted this time?

After a number of contentious elections many Americans don’t even have faith that their votes are being counted due to new electronic voting machines that are, at best, seriously flawed.

ABCNews has an article this morning highlighting some of the problems that exist with voting machines and explains how easily they can be hacked.

From ABCNews:

Computer experts and government officials have voiced serious concerns that if these machines malfunction, no paper record will exist for a recount. Even worse is the fear that an election could be hacked.

Princeton University researchers using an Accuvote TS — a touch screen version of the Diebold machine — showed how easy it would be to deploy a virus that would, in seconds, flip the vote of any election.

Why do we always wait until after elections to question whether our votes will be fairly and accurately counted?
