A Shining Light Up On The ‘Hill’

Dunkin Donuts
Are you a resident of Washington, D.C.? If you are, you’ll understand what I mean when I say, where are the Dunkin Donuts?

Growing up in the Northeast region of this great land I call America, you see the shimmering orange and purple everywhere. I believe there might be one or two small Dunkin Donuts in D.C., but they are off the beaten-path and very lightly trafficked.

Well, my friends, do I have good news for you! Come Monday morning, all of the pain and anguish of our Dunkin Donuts-less lives will change. That’s right; Dunkin Donuts is having a grand opening at 6am on Monday morning in Eastern Market.

8th St. and Pennsylvania Ave., SE.

“And out of this long political darkness a brighter day will come”

-Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), Keynote Speech - Democratic National Convention, July 27, 2004

See you bright and early Monday morning! I’ll be the giddy guy with the bakers dozen. Have a great weekend!

Republicans Can Be Clever Too

So far in the “Matthew Slutsky 2006 Ad Watch Competition” Governor Jim Doyle of Wisconsin is in the lead. His ad entitled “Six Times” is in my opinion the best Democratic ad of the cycle so far. I especially like the ending when he proclaims:

“Mark Green is too extreme to be Governor.”

Now, Mark Green is firing back. And, I must say it’s a clever ad.

It’s called “Extreme Family.” Check it out here:

Update: This ad is airing at a time when the campaigns are tied in the most recent statewide poll.

Hillary Clinton Ad: “Standing Up for New York”

A new ad from the Hillary Clinton campaign for U.S. Senate in New York. Certainly gripping at the end.

I believe most of this footage is taken directly from a 15 minute video that was produced for the New York State Democratic Convention a few months back.

Text of the Injuction

Here is the text of the federal injuction, stopping President Bush’s illegal spying program.

IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that Defendants, its agents, employees, representatives, and any other persons or entities in active concert or participation with Defendants, are permanently enjoined from directly or indirectly utilizing the Terrorist Surveillance Program (hereinafter “TSP”) in any way, including, but not limited to, conducting warrantless wiretaps of telephone and internet communications, in contravention of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (hereinafter “FISA”) and Title III;

IT IS FURTHER ORDERED AND DECLARED that the TSP violates the Separation of Powers doctrine, the Administrative Procedures Act, the First and Fourth Amendments to the United States Constitution, the FISA and Title III;

IT IS ALSO ORDERED that Defendants’ Motion for Summary Judgment is GRANTED with respect to Plaintiffs’ data-mining claim and is DENIED regarding Plaintiffs’ remaining claims;

IT IS ALSO ORDERED that Plaintiffs’ Motion for Partial Summary Judgment is GRANTED in its entirety.

IT IS SO ORDERED
.

All hail the rule of law.

Alternet has video up with quotes from the decision. Our favorite constitutional blogger, Glenn Greenwald has analysis up here. We’re hearing that the administration is currently working to get a stay on the injuction from the 6th Circuit Court. Keeping checking in all day as we bring you more updates.

A Federal Judge

has just ruled that the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretapping program is unconstitutional and has ordered an immediate halt. Said U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor, “Plaintiffs have prevailed, and the public interest is clear, in this matter. It is the upholding of our Constitution.”

It’s Racist Video Thursday!

We know you all love video. And we know you all love exposing racist GOPers. Today’s find is Tramm Hudson who is running for Katherine “Queen of the Crazy” Harris’s congressional seat.

Kathleen Sebelius: “Respect”

Governor Sebelius

Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius is out of the gate with this new ad entitled “Respect.” It’s produced by the same guy who did Wes Clark’s ads in 2004. Actually, it’s essentially the same ad with Governor Sebelius in the shot instead of General Clark.

Regardless, it’s a good ad. Check it out:

Another Side Of Allen

An Ass and a Horse

Well the spinning continues in Macaca-gate. If you’re not familiar with the story you can catch up here but the gist is that Sen. Allen is a bigot and publically harassed a minority staffer from Democratic opponent Jim Webb’s campaign. Well now the Allen campaign has another explanation. From Hotline:

What does Macaca really mean? Three Virginia Republicans confirmed to the Hotline that several Allen campaign aides and advisers are telling allies that the word was a made-up, off-the-cuff neologism that these aides occasionally used to refer to tracker S.R. Sidarth well before last Saturday’s videotaped encounter.

According to two Republicans who heard the word used, “macaca” was a mash-up of “Mohawk,” referring to Sidarth’s distinctive hair, and “caca,” Spanish slang for excrement, or “shit.”

Said one Republican close to the campaign: “In other words, he was a shit-head, an annoyance.” Allen, according to Republicans, heard members of his traveling entourage and Virginia Republicans use the phrase and picked it up. It was the first word that came to his mind when he spied Sidarth at the weekend’s event, according to Republicans who have been briefed on Allen’s version of the event.

Translation: Senator Allen isn’t a bigot, he’s just a huge asshole.
