Earth To George

From last night’s joint press conference with British Prime Minister Tony Blair:

Bush and Blair

Listen, I want our troops out, don’t get me wrong . . . but it’s vital that we do the job. A loss in Iraq would make this world an incredibly dangerous place.

The world is a dangerous place. Bush just doesn’t get it. The fight in Iraq has nothing to do with the war on terror or the hunt for Osama. Fighting in Iraq is not making America safer. We are making enemies in every region of the globe, we are alienating our strategic and diplomatic allies and we are losing thousands of brave American lives.

Bush also addressed his pompous missteps that directly led to the deaths of many innocent American troops. His answer:

President Bush admitted Thursday he regrets “tough talk” like telling Iraqi insurgents to “bring it on” and saying he wanted Osama Bin Laden “Dead or Alive.”

“I learned a lesson about expressing myself in a more sophisticated manner,” Bush said. “In certain parts of the world, it was misinterpreted, so I learned from that.”

Answering a question, Bush listed the “bring it on” comment from July 2003 and “Wanted Dead or Alive,” as well as the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, as mistakes made along the way since the 2003 invasion.

The President has credited First Lady Laura Bush with urging him to lose the cowboy talk.

Denny Is a Crook Too

ABC News is now reporting that Speaker of the House, and DeLay pool boy, Dennis Hastert (R-IL) is now “in the mix” in the ever widening Jack Abramoff scandal. Hastert is of course denying the claims, and even the Justice Department has denied the story, but Brian Ross and ABC continue to insist that multiple sources have told them that Hastert is under the microscope too. ThinkProgress has the transcript.

ROSS: Good morning Robin. Despite flat and repeated denies from the Department of Justice, federal law enforcement officials insist to ABC news the FBI investigation of capitol hill corruption has widened to include potentially Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert. Officials describe the 64-year-old Illinois republican as “very much in the mix” of the corruption investigation. Something the speaker told ABC News he was unaware of.

HASTERT: I know nothing about it.

ROSS: Part of the investigation is said to involve a letter Hastert wrote three years ago urging the Secretary of Interior to block a casino on an Indian reservation that would have competed with other tribes. The other tribes were represented by convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who reportedly has provided details of his dealings with Hastert as part of his plea agreement with the government. The letter was written shortly after a fund-raiser for Hastert at a restaurant owned by Abramoff. Abramoff and his clients contributed more than $26,000 at the time.

Knowing this now it seems particularly suspicious that Hastert was so quick to denounce the raid on Rep. William Jefferson’s office earlier in the week.

Curiouser and Curiouser

All of a sudden George Bush cares about the Constitution and the rule of law. Weird.

Says WashPo, Bush Orders Jefferson Records Sealed for 45 Days:

President Bush personally ordered the Justice Department today to seal records seized from the Capitol Hill office of a Democratic congressman, marking a remarkable intervention by the nation’s chief executive into an ongoing criminal probe of alleged corruption.

The order culminates an escalating constitutional confrontation between the Justice Department and the House of Representatives, where lawmakers have demanded that the FBI return items seized during a Saturday night raid of the office of Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.).

In a six-paragraph statement, Bush said he issued the order to give the Justice Department and angry lawmakers more time to work out an agreement about how to resolve the conflict.

Here’s my favorite part:

“Those who violate the law–including a member of Congress–should and will be held to account,” Bush said.

Something very strange is going on on Capitol Hill.

‘Kenny Boy Lay’ Goes Down

Ken Lay and George Bush

ENRON JURY REACHES VERDICT:

ENRON FOUNDER ‘KENNY BOY’ LAY: GUILTY ON ALL CHARGES!

CEO JEFFREY SKILLING: GUILTY ON SOME CHARGES!

MORE TO COME…

CNN:

The jury in the Enron case has reached a verdict, and the decision in the corporate fraud case will be announced in less than an hour, a court clerk announced Thursday.

The jury of eight women and four men reached their verdict on the sixth day of deliberations in the case of Enron founder Kenneth Lay and former CEO Jeffrey Skilling, who were charged with conspiring to hide the financial losses that brought down what was once the nation’s seventh-biggest company.

Lay, Skilling and representatives of the federal prosecutors have arrived in the courthouse.

Skilling was charged with 28 counts of conspiracy, fraud and insider trading while Lay faced six counts of conspiracy and fraud.

Houston-based Enron, once one of the hottest companies on Wall Street, imploded in a matter of months after Skilling abruptly resigned as CEO in August 2001. Lay, who was chairman at the time, postponed his retirement plans to return to the helm.

Sen. Bill Nelson

From Political Wire:

In Florida’s U.S. Senate race, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) continues to dominate Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL), according to a new Strategic Vision (R) poll. Nelson currently beats Harris 56% to 26%.

Katherine Harris is a crook. Katherine Harris takes bribes from defense contractors. Katherine Harris is a cheater. Katherine Harris looks like Cruella Devil.
