Is Bush Lying Again?

Duyba
It has been reported that U.S. Marines allegedly killed about two dozen unarmed Iraqi men, women and children in the western city of Haditha last November. Today, Bush spoke out for the first time on this matter.

President Bush said Wednesday he was troubled by allegations that U.S. Marines had killed unarmed Iraqi civilians and that, “if in fact laws were broken, there will be punishment.”

Flashback

President Bush said Monday that if anyone on his staff committed a crime in the CIA-leak case, that person will “no longer work in my administration.”

Please note, no one was ever fired in connection with the CIA leak. Karl Rove, who could be days away from being indicted still holds a security clearance in the White House and serves as a senior political aide to Bush.

Alright Bush, were you lying then and now you’re being serious? America doesn’t trust you. This is a very important situation and we need a Commander in Chief who is serious about leadership and whose word we can trust. You are not that man.

Hillary Rodham Clinton For Senate

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) kicked off her campaign in front of 700 people at New York’s Democratic state convention.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton kicked off her bid for a second Senate term Wednesday, telling supporters to get ready for a Democratic sweep in November.

“When the dust clears in November, New York is going to have a Democratic government from top to bottom, and we’re going to show the rest of the country what that means,” Clinton said to the nearly 700 people at New York’s Democratic state convention.

U.S. Troops Kill Pregnant Woman In Iraq

according to the Associated Press. “U.S. forces killed two Iraqi women — one of them about to give birth — when the troops shot at a car that failed to stop at an observation post in a city north of Baghdad, Iraqi officials and relatives said Wednesday.”

Radical Rick Falling Further Behind

While Radical Rick will probably blame his low polling numbers on ‘the gays’ or ‘working mothers’ - we here at DoubleSpeak blame it on the fact that Sen. Rick Santorum is out of the mainstream of American politics and he will lose his election to the next great Senator from Pennsylvania, Bob Casey Jr.

Say what you will about Bob Casey, he is now officially the Democratic nominee and I believe he has this fight in him. He understands the stakes of what a Santroum re-election would look like and I hope the whole country will soon get behind his candidacy.

He is up on the airwaves with a new commercial and he has a new website that looks really good.

In a recent Rasmussen Reports poll, Casey is leading Santorum 56% to 33% - That’s 23%. Give ‘em hell, Bobby!

Ford…FOCUS!

It is impossible to talk about the 2006 election cycle and the Democrats’ chances without including in the discussion the campaign of Harold Ford Jr. in Tennessee.

If the pendulum swings and things really do happen for the D’s in 2006, then a state like Tennessee will be within our reach. Regardless, if we can stay competitive and give the resources to this critical race then many believe it will be a bellwether for good things to come. From the NYTimes:

“Tennessee could very well make or break whether we take back the Senate,” Mr. Schumer said.

Tennessee Republicans say they are confident their state will hold the line against what they call just another liberal. “He’s a media darling, he’s charismatic, all of the above, but at the end of the day, the guy doesn’t vote right,” said Bob Davis Jr., chairman of the State Republican Party.

Brad Todd, a consultant to former Representative Van Hilleary, a Republican contender for the Senate, said: “This is a federal race, and Tennessee elects bona fide conservatives to federal office. Even when Al Gore first ran for the Senate, he ran as a pro-life, pro-gun conservative. And Harold Ford is not that.”

Before Republicans can mount a full-scale campaign against Mr. Ford, they have a fiercely competitive primary to settle. Three major candidates are vying for the nomination in the Aug. 3 primary: Mr. Hilleary, former Representative Ed Bryant and Bob Corker, a former mayor of Chattanooga. Mr. Bryant and Mr. Corker have run for the Senate before and were defeated in Republican primaries. Much of the debate so far has revolved around who is the true conservative in the race.

One reason for Democratic optimism here is the possibility of a wounded Republican nominee emerging from a bitter (and relatively late) primary. Mr. Ford’s major opponent in the Democrat primary withdrew recently, giving him the luxury of running a general election campaign — raising money and running advertising, most recently on the price of gasoline.

Get involved in this race. Visit Rep. Ford’s website and give give give today!

South Dakota: Out of Touch

As many of you know, South Dakota recently passed the most draconian anti-abortion law in the country. Just yesterday, The South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families said it turned in twice as many signatures as it needed to in order to hold a statewide ballot vote in November on whether to repeal this disgusting law. From the WaPo:

Jan Nicolay, co-chairwoman of the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families, said she believes it would be the nation’s first statewide election on abortion since Roe v. Wade. Opponents of the ban decided to pursue a popular vote instead of filing a lawsuit.

We would prefer this be dealt with by the people of the state of South Dakota and not spend a lot of money fighting a legal battle,” Nicolay said.

Leslee Unruh, an abortion opponent who lobbied for the ban, said she believes South Dakotans will do what is right. “I believe we are a pro-life state,” she said.

This is not a lost cause. We can change this awful law.

Making It Harder To Vote

NYT
Since the 2000 election, issues surrounding the way Americans vote have been brought to light. The New York Times took on this issue yesterday in an editorial called Block The Vote.

If you haven’t had a chance to read it, check out what different state legislatures are doing to limit the rights of Americans when it comes to having full access to voting.

Florida recently reached a new low when it actually bullied the League of Women Voters into stopping its voter registration efforts in the state. The Legislature did this by adopting a law that seems intended to scare away anyone who wants to run a voter registration drive. Since registration drives are particularly important for bringing poor people, minority groups and less educated voters into the process, the law appears to be designed to keep such people from voting.
