More Bushification

Remember Ari Melber’s piece, “The Bushification of John McCain” from Episode 2?

Looks like the supposed maverick is continuing down the wingnut path. Today comes the news that Senator McCain will be giving the commencement address at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University.

American military hero and Arizona Sen. John McCain will deliver the Commencement message at Liberty University on May 13, at 9:30 a.m., in the Liberty University Vines Center. In addition, renowned Christian conservative leader Gary Bauer will speak during the University’s baccalaureate service on May 12, at 7:00 p.m., in the main sanctuary of the Thomas Road Baptist Church.

While Sen. McCain and Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell have had their share of political differences through the years, the two men share a common respect for each other and have become good friends in their efforts to preserve what they see as common values. This will mark his first ever appearance at Liberty University.

Jerry Falwell is the man who said “If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.” Is that one of Senator McCain’s values?

   when i worked in virginia last cycle, i heard stories that sounded like tall tales about falwell and his “kingdom on a hill” in lynchburg. most of the stories centered around a constant rumor that positioned falwell as a frequent “dodger” when it came to driving his personal vehicle around campus and the community.

   apparently falwell has been reported as someone who likes driving extremely close to students in the parking lot…. with one story claiming that he would speed up to scare students into thinking that he was going to hit them.

   i’ve had a couple of former lynchburg residents tell me that the falwell family vehicle is actually an armor-reinforced SUV that is fondly referred to as the holy tank.

   i’m actually going to see if i can find some clips or old stories about falwell that can reinforce these rumors….. until then i guess it’s just a blogger’s dream right?
