Break on Through To the Other Side

The greatest disappointment of these Alito proceedings is the inability for the Democrats to persuade any Republican Senators to join in the dissent of Bush’s right-wing choice to sit on America’s highest court. It is not altogether surprising that nobody wanted to vote against their party and their leader, at the risk of losing RSCC or RNC money, but that didn’t stop us from at least holding out hope.

Yesterday, Survey USA released their Senate rankings. Two of the five highest rated Senators are the two GOP Senators from Maine, Snowe (2) and Collins (4). It would have been nice to see one or both of them abandon their party to send their renegade leaders a message. They can’t stand to lose too much given their local popularity. It was no surprise to see that faux-moderate Arlen Spector (56) refused to support his own Pro-Choice stance, and align with his party, but nonetheless, it was a reaffirmation that even if you are named a “RINO” (Republican in Name Only), you are still a Republican.

In the words of the former Democratic Representative from Texas Sam Rayburn, “Son, if you can’t take their money, drink their whiskey, screw their women, and then vote against ‘em, you don’t deserve to be here.”

Friday Morning Thought

Let America Be America Again

By Langston Hughes

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

Sen. Kerry to Filibuster

Politicalwire reports today that Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) is preparing to lead a filibuster against the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito (RRR-NJ). Sen. Kerry promised back in June of 2003 that he would filibuster any nominee to the Supreme Court who would threaten Roe.

We’ll see how far he gets. Go Johnny Go!

“I am prepared to filibuster, if necessary, any Supreme Court nominee who would turn back the clock on a woman’s right to choose or the constitutional right to privacy, on civil rights and individual liberties and on the laws protecting workers and the environment.”

– Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), quoted by the AP, June 20, 2003.

House Democrats are planning

maneuvers to “force the White House to turn over photographs of the President with his onetime fundraiser and now-guilty lobbyist Jack Abramoff,” Raw Story reports.

And the Winner Is…

Hamas.  While Sharon sleepsHamas Wins

Who would want to be in charge of this crowd?

John Shadegg, that’s who. And Congressman Shadegg seems to be gaining some momentum in his quest to replace outgoing smiley-man Tom Delay as House Majority Leader. Here’s some more:

Shadegg, who is popular with business groups for his support of tax cuts and free trade, is looking to become the next GOP leader in the House, replacing Texas Congressman Tom DeLay who resigned the leadership post after being indicted on fraud charges.

Shadegg has picked up the support of East Valley Congressman Jeff Flake, U.S Rep. Charlie Bass, R-N.H. and conservative Virginia Congressman Frank Wolf. They like the Phoenician’s focus on fiscal conservativism and overcoming recent ethics scandals.

It’s not clear why anyone would want to become captain of this ship seeing as how it’s already hit the iceberg and all the life boats are full. It’ll be interesting to see who lines up behind Shadegg prior to the full caucus vote. From CNN:

Ninety House members publicly have supported Blunt’s candidacy. Boehner’s camp maintains the race isn’t over, arguing he has 90 supporters, 47 of them public.

“The numbers don’t add up,” Flake said. “This is very much still a contested race. Anybody who goes into a situation with a secret ballot, who claims to have it wrapped up, ought to hear footsteps.”

The race is on…

Bush Finally Explains the Medicare Drug Bill

As the president tours the country promoting the hideously complex and horribly botched Medicare Drug Bill as well as his right to illegally spy on Americans, he’s been taking questions from the audience. Here is GWB’s verbatim response to the question, “I don’t really understand. How is it the new plan going to fix the problem?

Verbatim response, PRESIDENT BUSH:

“Because the — all which is on the table begins to address the big cost drivers. For example, how benefits are calculated, for example, is on the table. Whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price increases. There’s a series of parts of the formula that are being considered. And when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those — changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has been promised more likely to be — or closer delivered to that has been promised. Does that make any sense to you? It’s kind of muddled.

Look, there’s a series of things that cause the — like, for example, benefits are calculated based upon the increase of wages, as opposed to the increase of prices. Some have suggested that we calculate — the benefits will rise based upon inflation, supposed to wage increases. There is a reform that would help solve the red if that were put into effect. In other words, how fast benefits grow, how fast the promised benefits grow, if those — if that growth is affected, it will help on the red.”

Thanks George.

Casey Jr. Supports Alito

It was probably to be expected, but Bob Casey Jr., the Rendell/Schumer annointed anti-choice Democratic candidate picked to run against Rick Santorum in the 2006 PA Senate election, came out this morning in favor of the nomination of Alito to the Supreme Court.

For weeks, Republicans have called Casey “Silent Bob” and pressed him to say whether he supports Alito’s confirmation. Casey and Alito have a family connection because Alito, who serves on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals based in Philadelphia, sided with Casey’s father, the late Gov. Bob Casey, in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. The case challenged a state law requiring women seeking abortions to notify their spouses.

“I do not agree with everything that Judge Samuel Alito has done or said - particularly many of his rulings which too often result in corporate power prevailing over the interests of consumers and workers,” Casey said in a statement. “However, I agree with The Philadelphia Inquirer and Washington Post editorial boards that the arguments against Judge Alito do not rise to the level that would require a vote denying him a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.”

Casey has had a relationship with Alito dating back to the judge’s dissent in favor of Casey’s father in the Planned Parenthood vs. Casey case. Unfortunately this endorsement is another step towards the right’s goal of blocking women from the basic human right to choose. Chuck Pennachio, another candidate for the PA nomination, has some words for Casey on his blog.

Ma, how come nobody likes me?

George Bush is not the most popular boy in school. In fact, only 36% of his fellow Americans approve of the way he’s doing his job. If only 36% of my boss approved of my job performance, I would be watching Maury Povich all day and not at the office anymore.

George W. Bush’s overall job approval rating returns to its record low as Americans once again become less optimistic about the national economy. Details from the nationwide survey conducted by the American Research Group January 19-22 are available at The American Research Groups website.
